Kilo Code is an open-source coding agent for work in a repository. It can help explain code, plan a change, edit files, and investigate errors. Its documented agents now include Code, Ask, Plan, and Debug. The former Orchestrator mode is deprecated, so it should not be treated as a current reason to choose the product.
Workflow
Connect a model provider, open a project, and describe a bounded task with its acceptance criteria. Use Ask for questions or Plan to work through the change before Code edits files. Inspect tool permissions before letting the agent run commands. Review the diff and run the relevant checks yourself. Local connections include Ollama and LM Studio. A local main model alone does not prove that every auxiliary feature or connected tool stays on your machine.
Costs and limits
The client being open source does not make hosted inference free. Kilo Gateway deducts model usage at the upstream provider’s rate without an inference markup. Buying Kilo credits adds a separate 5% payment-processing fee that does not increase your balance. Gateway BYOK requests have no model charge on Kilo’s side, while the provider bills you directly.
