OpenCode is an open-source coding agent for repository tasks. Its current V2 introduction describes terminal, desktop and web interfaces. It is useful to consider when you want to choose the model provider separately from the coding client.
Choose the version before installing
Follow the V2 guide for a new setup. The older V1 guide installs a different package, and both versions use the opencode command. Existing users should read the migration guide: V1 plugins and server integrations need review, and both versions share configuration locations. Back up the current setup before converting configuration.
Connect a provider using the provider instructions, select an available model and start with a small repository task. Review tool permissions, inspect the diff and run project checks before accepting edits. Reusing a provider does not make another coding client’s rules or permissions transfer automatically.
Free software and model costs
The optional OpenCode Console model catalog includes paid models and selected limited-time free models. Their availability and data-use conditions differ. Check the exact model entry before sending private code. A free offer does not promise unlimited capacity; external API keys follow their provider’s billing and quotas.
For a VS Code extension workflow, also consider Cline. The clients use different interfaces and configuration. Official documentation checked on October 23, 2026; no live agent task or model-quality comparison was performed.
