Is Cursor free for students in 2026? Current access and promotion checks
Is Cursor free for students in 2026?
Students can start with Cursor's general free plan. The current student page does not promise a free year of Pro to every verified student. Its FAQ points readers to promotions at on-campus and online events starting in the fall. Check an active offer before treating an old student benefit as available. Current Cursor student page.
We checked the live official pages on October 23, 2026. This guide is a documentation review. We did not redeem an offer, verify a student account, or test a paid subscription.
What changed from older guides
Older pages and search snippets describe a one-year Pro promotion with university verification. They do not establish current availability. The live student page now says that anyone can start for free and directs students to campus programs, events, and a newsletter for promotions.
That distinction matters if an article asks you to provide a university address, payment card, or student documents. Do not submit those details to a third-party discount site on the assumption that the old offer remains open. Start with Cursor's own page and follow the terms of the specific event or promotion.
We could not confirm a universal current list of eligible universities, countries, required email domains, or promotion duration. Those details should come from the active offer, not a copied 2025 application flow.
Free access still has usage limits
Cursor's pricing page lists a Free plan with limited AI usage, including limited agent and chat requests. Paid tiers have different usage and model terms. Check the current comparison for the exact plan you are considering.
The pricing page also states that third-party model usage is separately billed on applicable paid tiers. Do not assume that a student discount includes every model, unlimited requests, or additional usage. The total depends on the promotion, selected plan, and usage settings.
A free plan is enough to evaluate whether the editor fits a class project. It does not guarantee that a long agent task, repeated large-context request, or every supported model is included.
Check an offer before activating it
- Open the official student page while signed into the account you intend to use. Read the current promotion or event terms before starting verification.
- Confirm eligibility, the benefit, the redemption deadline, and the duration. Check whether the offer applies to an existing paid account.
- Read the checkout price, any required payment method, renewal date, and extra-usage settings. Keep a copy of the terms that apply to your account.
- After activation, confirm the plan and billing state in your account. If the promised benefit is missing, resolve it with official support before accepting an unexpected charge.
If no promotion applies, use the general free plan or choose a paid tier on its current terms. A student email alone does not establish a discount.
Use it for coursework you can explain
Start with a small repository and ask for a bounded change. Read the diff, run the assignment's checks, and make sure you can explain the result. Follow your course's rules for AI assistance and disclosure. A subscription benefit does not change those rules.
