Flux 1 Kontext
FLUX.1 Kontext is an earlier image model family from Black Forest Labs. Its official documentation now groups it under legacy models and recommends FLUX.2 for new image generation and editing projects. This page remains useful when maintaining an existing Kontext workflow or checking a third-party service that advertises the model.
What it offers
The hosted pro and max variants combine text-to-image generation with edits based on an existing image and a written instruction. Typical tasks include changing an object color, replacing lettering, adjusting a style, or continuing edits around the same subject. The downloadable dev variant supports editing only. These are distinct deployments, not free, Pro, and Max subscription tiers of one application.
Access and cost
BFL lists Kontext pro at US$0.04 per image and max at US$0.08 per image, with the same rates in its API and Playground. Batch requests multiply the image cost. Third-party websites set their own charges and limits. Local dev weights use the FLUX Non-Commercial License; commercial operation requires separate permission. Do not confuse model deployment rights with the terms for generated outputs.
Practical limits
For a new integration, compare the current FLUX.2 documentation before committing to legacy endpoints. Migration can change reference handling, request parameters, output appearance, and billing. Keep representative source images and instructions to compare results. An instruction to preserve a face, product label, or background is not a guarantee that every detail remains unchanged.
