Perplexity
Perplexity combines web search with a conversational answer interface. It is useful for building an initial reading list, comparing published information, or asking follow-up questions about sources and uploaded files. Source links help you inspect where an answer comes from, but their presence does not prove that every statement matches the linked page.
Build a source-backed comparison
Give Perplexity a narrow question, the relevant country, and a date range. Ask for a comparison that distinguishes current facts from estimates. Open the cited sources, check their dates, and confirm the passages behind the important claims. Use a follow-up question to investigate missing evidence rather than accepting the first summary as a complete literature review.
Free access and upgrades
The Standard plan includes basic searches, a limited number of advanced searches, and limited file uploads. Perplexity chooses the model for free queries. Pro adds broader model access and higher search and upload allowances. Max offers higher access for heavier use. Individual subscriptions and the developer API are separate products.
Education Pro is a paid discount for verified students and educators. The help center lists $10 per month and uses SheerID to verify eligibility. It is not a permanent free student entitlement. Features and allowances differ by plan, so check the current upgrade screen and help documentation before planning a large research project.
